Mountain communities are a special place - the beauty, the connection to nature, and access to endless activities are some of the reasons you may call Summit County home.

However, living in a mountain community has its unique challenges. Long winters, lack of community, and isolation are some of the main factors that can negatively affect mental health.

Mental health in Summit County has been described as an “epidemic” due to the high rates of depression, suicide, and substance use in the area.

Depression can leave you feeling hopeless and defeated. You feel like you are just surviving through life, without any joy or pleasure in your daily life.

Anxiety can affect your ability to engage in your life fully because you may be feeling constantly worried, or stressed, in addition to uncomfortable physical symptoms

Trauma can have a negative impact on your life and lead to other issues like depression, anxiety, addiction and substance use, and difficulty in your relationships.

Addiction is a complex mental health disorder that affects every aspect of our lives including our bodies, minds, and relationships.

Relationship issues can lead you to feel unhappy or disconnected from your partner, family, or friends and can create feelings of loneliness, sadness, and anxiety.

FAQs about therapy in Summit County, CO

  • It can feel tricky to identify your progress in therapy because it isn’t as black or white as something like a fitness or financial goal. Success and progress in therapy is individualized and together, you and your therapist will identify your treatment goals and ways to tell if you are making progress.

Generally speaking, some indicators of progress are feeling that your mood has generally improved, negative behaviors have lessened, your relationships have improved, or that you feel better about yourself.

  • Each client’s individual treatment plans will vary, and the length of treatment can differ for everyone. Some clients may prefer shorter-term therapy, while others are looking for long-term therapy. There is research to support that on average, an episode of 15-20 sessions have been found to provide positive outcomes for clients.

Using different modalities and treatment approaches like EMDR or psychedelic assisted psychotherapy also play a role in the time spent in treatment.

  • Finding a therapist that is a good fit for you and your needs is crucial. Research supports that the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors to a client’s outcomes in therapy, even more important than the treatment approach and therapist’s years of experience!

With that in mind, we offer a free 10-15 minute phone consultation for all potential clients to connect, answer your questions, and see if we’re a good fit.

We recommend starting with at least two sessions to decide on the fit, being aware that starting therapy with a stranger can be overwhelming, scary, and even awkward. We are here to make the process easier.

If for whatever reason you change your mind or decide we’re not a fit, we are happy to provide you with a list of other referrals that may be better suited for you.

  • There’s really no way to know for sure, other than giving therapy a try. It may be a good idea to begin therapy if:

-your mental health is affecting your ability to function or getting in the way of your daily responsibilities

-symptoms like anxiety, depression, frustration, and anger are not getting better with time

-you’ve experienced a challenging life event, or have a life transition coming up

-you want support, and a safe place to talk to someone who is not directly involved in your day to day life
