70% of Americans have experienced trauma at some point in their lives. We may not know that something is traumatic when it is happening, but if a past event or experience is creating disturbing thoughts, emotions, or body sensations, you could be experiencing trauma.

The good news is that trauma is highly treatable and at Alchemy Therapy & Wellness, I offer an effective therapy called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). The name sounds scary, but the actual process of EMDR therapy is not as technical as it sounds, and is extremely effective.

My name Is Hannah Buzzo and I am a trained EMDR therapist in Denver and Frisco, CO.

Trauma is any event that creates an intense emotional response for us. Trauma can result from extreme events like physical, sexual or emotional abuse, natural disasters, or war. In addition, trauma can also result from experiences like witnessing a distressing event, mental health disorders, addiction, injuries, or any event that creates a disturbance in our ability to feel physically or emotionally safe or in control.

Trauma may be a part of your story, but it does not define you. EMDR therapy can help you feel whole again.

Trauma affects all aspects of us - our thoughts, emotions, and bodies. Because our nervous system can be affected when we experience trauma, we can’t heal trauma just by talking about the events of the past, or repressing the difficult emotions. We must access the nervous system in order to help your body feel safe, and in turn, become less reactive to triggers. Because trauma overwhelms our bodies when it occurs, traumatic memories can becoming “stuck”, which impact our daily lives by affecting our emotions, relationships, and sense of self. Some examples of how these “stuck” memories manifest are difficult feelings like shame, guilt, fear, and anxiety, trouble connecting with others, flashbacks, insomnia, and feelings of numbness. EMDR can help.

EMDR is a powerful tool that can help you reprocess past experiences. The process of EMDR involves using bilateral stimulation (simply holding on to alternating vibrations in your hands, or watching a light move from left to right) which connects the left and right sides of the brain. The bilateral stimulation, or BLS, helps activate both sides of your brain in order to help them integrate with each other, and re-process trauma.

The process may sound intimidating but don’t worry. A crucial part of EMDR therapy is the “preparation phase” where the client and EMDR therapist develop a relationship, identify goals for EMDR therapy, and work to stimulate the nervous system in a safe way before any trauma re-processing takes place.

  • No. EMDR does not erase memories, but rather helps the brain re-process difficult experiences that have been stored in the body. You will still remember what happened to you, but the goal of EMDR is to help you not feel the negative emotion, or experience triggers related to the traumatic memory.

  • Like any type of therapy, it is hard to say exactly how long treatment will last.

However, clients usually experience some relief in a few sessions after beginning the EMDR protocol.

A 2014 study found that 80-90% of clients started to see positive results from EMDR within three sessions.

  • Although EMDR is known as an extremely effective treatment for PTSD, there is emerging research around using EMDR to treat other issues as well. In my practice as an EMDR therapist in Denver and Summit County, CO, I am trained to provide EMDR for the treatment of trauma, in addition to other concerns like anxiety, panic, addiction/substance abuse, and OCD.
